Popular Destinations in Tangier
Kasbah Museum (Dar el-Makhzen)
The former Sultan’s palace at the medina’s highest point now houses a museum of Mediterranean cultures — Phoenician artefacts, Roman mosaics, and Andalusian zellij courtyards. The terrace offers sweeping views over the Strait of Gibraltar to Spain.
Petit Socco & Grand Socco
Tangier’s two main squares anchor opposite ends of the medina — Petit Socco, the small café-lined plaza famously frequented by William Burroughs and Paul Bowles, and Grand Socco, the larger gateway between old town and modern Tangier.
Cap Spartel & Caves of Hercules
14 km west of Tangier, Cap Spartel marks the meeting point of the Atlantic and Mediterranean — a 19th-century lighthouse, dramatic cliff views, and the nearby Caves of Hercules with their famous Africa-shaped sea opening.
American Legation Museum
The oldest US diplomatic property anywhere — gifted by Sultan Moulay Suleiman in 1821 and now a museum of Moroccan-American history. The compact building includes archives, art, and a small room dedicated to Paul Bowles.
Tangier Medina
The whitewashed Tangier medina climbs the slope from the port to the kasbah — a tightly-woven maze of stepped lanes, hidden riads, art galleries, and the famous Petit Socco at its heart. Less labyrinthine than Fes or Marrakech, with a Mediterranean feel and the bonus of sweeping views toward Spain from the upper terraces.
Cafe Hafa
Café Hafa has been clinging to Tangier’s clifftop since 1921 — a series of mint-tea terraces stepping down toward the Strait of Gibraltar, with views across to Spain on clear days. Frequented over the decades by the Rolling Stones, Paul Bowles, and a long list of writers, it remains an essential Tangier ritual.
Mendoubia Gardens
The Mendoubia Gardens, just off the Grand Socco, are a quiet leafy oasis at the entrance to the medina — home to a giant 800-year-old banyan tree, a colonial-era Mendoub residence (Sultan’s representative during the International Zone period), and a small museum. A peaceful pause between the medina and the new town.
Tangier Marina Bay
The newly redeveloped Tangier Marina Bay and Tanger Ville train station district have transformed the city’s waterfront — sleek modern architecture, hundreds of yacht berths, beachfront promenades, restaurants, and the high-speed Al Boraq train terminal that connects Tangier to Casablanca in just over two hours.
